Inquiries regarding sampling methods used by SMILE engine

Post by jgomezgIIT »

Dear support team of BAYESFUSION

I am a PhD candidate at the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT) in Madrid, Spain,

https://www.iit.comillas.edu/index.php.en

This is a center for applied engineering research. I am a GeNIe user (and its Python interface) which is extremely useful in our research. Since we are devoted to research (In wildfire modelling, in particular) we use SMILE according to your academic license. We find particularly useful the approximate methods for inference and node probability marginalization. We can only grasp the names of the method encapsulated within the Bayesian Network objects (L_SAMPLING, HENRION…).

We kindly ask if we could get the specific references for the implementation of those approximate methods. Is it included within the tutorials? We may have missed the specific citation for the methods. Of course, we are aware of the list of references that you provide in on of the manuals, but we are interested in the specific citation for the implementation of the methods (a reference for L_SAMPLING, the respective for HENRION…).

We are very grateful for having the opportunity of using your software for our research and we understand that this may be a consulting question.

Sincerely,

Juan Luis

Hi Juan Luis,

Thank you for your kind words about GeNIe and SMILE -- we have been trying our best to develop a flexible and useful tool for the academic and commercial communities. You will find the GIS capabilities included in the most recent release of GeNIe (4.0) very useful in environmental work. Have you looked at the DBNs and the capability of modeling dynamic systems based on difference equations? We have experimented with dynamic models, such as the harmonic oscillator or predator-prey model based on Lotka-Volterra equations.

The literature references to stochastic sampling algorithms implemented in GeNIe are all listed in subsections of the section "Building blocks of GeNIe/Inference algorithms/Bayesian network algorithms/Stochastic sampling algorithms" of GeNIe manual. The full references are in the "Resources/References" section.
Cheers,

Marek
